It was the fall of 1989. I was nearing 14 years old and my family was preparing to move from Livingston, Texas to Albuquerque, New Mexico. I was staying in Texas with my best friend since first grade, Angela, while my folks were searching for a place to live in our soon-to-be new home. I suddenly became extremely ill. It seemed to be one of those flu bugs that turns on like a light switch. I was laying in her bed shivering with chills when her Granny, who I’d known since I was 6 years old, came into the room, hands waving in the air, praying to her Jesus and speaking in tongues. She placed her hands upon me and I WAS HEALED! Now, call it what you want - prayer, divine intervention, reiki, psychosomatic healing -- whatever it was, I felt miraculously better! It was so profound to me that nearly 25 years later I wrote this song about it, and nearly 35 years after the healing moment, I recorded the song I wrote about it.
lyrics
RAISE YOUR HANDS GRANNY
Kasey Rausch
I was feelin’ mighty bad. My head was a-poundin’
I was feelin’ mighty bad and my head start to pound
Then Granny came in a-waivin’ her hands
Granny came in just a-waivin’ her hands
Raise your hands, Granny
Oh Granny raise your hands
Raise your hands, Granny
Won’t you raise your hands
My belly was a-churnin’. My knees felt weak.
My belly was a-churnin’ and my knees felt weak.
Then Granny came in a-waggin’ her tongue
Granny came in just a-waggin’ her tongue
Raise your hands, Granny
Oh Granny raise your hands
Raise your hands, Granny
Won’t you raise your hands
My bones started shakin’. My brow dripped sweat
My bones started shakin’ and my brow dripped sweat
Then Granny came in with the lord in her eyes
Granny came in with the lord in her eyes
Raise your hands, Granny
Oh Granny raise your hands
Raise your hands, Granny
Won’t you raise your hands
